Two years ago, Whitney Cowie, of Indianola, then 10 years old, purchased a pair of chickens
form Nancy Dean to show at the Warren County Fair.
Cowie has hatched and raised over 500 chicks in her grandpa Dennis Ruby's basement. She not
only shows her birds nationwide, but has also become quite the young entrepreneur selling her birds and hatching eggs to others.
Even though Whitney is eligible to show in the junior division until she is 18, she competes
in the open level against the experienced breeders.At the United Poultry Fanciers Club Show and the River City Round-Up Fair
and Festival in Omaha recently she received a record number of awards.
In the Junior Show, she won Champion Bantam, Reserve Champion Large Fowl, reserve champion Old
English Game, Champion Continental, Reserve Champion Continental, and champion Feather-legged.
At the United Poultry Fancier Club Show in the open division, she won Champion Continental,
Reserve Champion Continental and Reserve Champion Feather-legged. At the River City Round-Up Fair and Festival in the open
division, she won the Jim Moore Memorial Prize-Best Large Fowl of Show, A.P.A. Reserve Champion Land fowl, Reserve Champion
Bantam of Show, Champion Feather-legged, Champion Continental and Reserve Champion Continental. From this show, she earned
eight trophies, six plaques and cash prizes.
Cowie plans to attend the Faverolle National in Minnesota and the National Poultry Show in Canada
this year.
